The Black Spot Tang, also known as the Black Spot Surgeonfish or Black Spot Sailfin Tang, is a species of marine fish that belongs to the family Acanthuridae. Its scientific name is Zebrasoma rostratum. As the name suggests, this tang has distinctive black spots on its body, which make it quite unique and easily recognizable.

Here are some key characteristics of the Black Spot Tang:

Appearance: The Black Spot Tang has a laterally compressed body with a disk-like shape. It has a vibrant yellow or orange coloration with black spots scattered across its body. The fins are typically yellow, and it has a prominent sail-like dorsal fin.

Size: Adult Black Spot Tangs can reach a maximum size of around 15 inches (38 cm) in length, although they are more commonly found around 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) in the home aquarium.

Habitat: They are native to the Indo-Pacific region, specifically found in the waters around the Maldives, the Andaman Sea, and the Philippines. They inhabit coral reefs, usually in areas with strong water currents.

Behavior: Black Spot Tangs are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-looking species. They are active swimmers and require ample swimming space in the aquarium.

Diet: In the wild, Black Spot Tangs primarily feed on a variety of algae and other plant material. In an aquarium setting, they should be offered a varied diet that includes high-quality marine algae, spirulina, and other herbivorous preparations. Supplementing their diet with fresh vegetables like seaweed or blanched spinach is also beneficial.

Tank requirements: Black Spot Tangs require a well-maintained aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming space. They prefer a tank size of at least 75 gallons (284 liters) to accommodate their active nature. Good water quality and strong filtration are crucial, along with regular maintenance to keep nitrates and phosphates low.

Compatibility: While Black Spot Tangs are generally peaceful, they may exhibit aggression towards similar-looking fish or tangs of the same genus. It is recommended to keep them in larger tanks with plenty of hiding spots and avoid housing them with conspecifics. Tankmates should be carefully chosen to ensure compatibility.

Overall, the Black Spot Tang is a beautiful and interesting fish species that can make a captivating addition to a well-maintained marine aquarium. It is important to provide them with appropriate care, including a proper diet and suitable tank conditions, to ensure their health and well-being.
