The Blonde Naso Tang (Naso elegans), also known as the Orangespine Unicornfish, is a species of tang or surgeonfish found in the waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It is known for its striking appearance and vibrant coloration.
Here are some key features of the Blonde Naso Tang:
Appearance: The Blonde Naso Tang has a sleek, elongated body with a pointed snout or "naso." It has a distinctive coloration that includes a yellowish or golden body, hence its name "Blonde," with a bold black stripe running vertically along its body. It also has bright blue markings around its eyes and on its dorsal and anal fins. The tail fin is often bright yellow or orange.
Size: This tang can grow quite large, reaching up to 16 to 18 inches (40 to 45 cm) in length when fully matured. However, in captivity, they are more commonly seen at sizes ranging from 10 to 14 inches (25 to 35 cm).
Habitat: Blonde Naso Tangs are typically found in the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region, including areas such as the Red Sea, East Africa, the Maldives, and the Great Barrier Reef. They inhabit both shallow and deeper waters.
Behavior: These tangs are generally peaceful but can become aggressive towards other tangs or fish with similar body shapes. It is best to keep them in a large tank with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. They are also known to be jumpers, so a secure lid or cover is necessary for their aquarium.
Diet: In the wild, the Blonde Naso Tang feeds on a varied diet that includes algae, zooplankton, and small invertebrates. In captivity, they should be provided with a diverse diet that includes high-quality marine-based foods such as algae sheets, spirulina flakes, and pellets. Offering them a mix of frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and mysis shrimp can also be beneficial.
Aquarium Care: Keeping a Blonde Naso Tang requires a large aquarium with excellent water quality and proper filtration. They prefer a well-established tank with live rock for grazing and hiding. The recommended minimum tank size for a single adult Blonde Naso Tang is around 180 gallons (680 liters).h.
