Description
The Burgess's butterflyfish (Chaetodon burgessi) is a striking black-and-white marine species known for its peaceful temperament and suitability for fish-only saltwater aquariums. First described in 1973, it is named after American ichthyologist Warren E. Burgess.
Physical characteristics
-
Coloration: The fish has a whitish to pale yellowish body with three prominent, contrasting black bands.
- The first band runs vertically through the eye, acting as a mask.
- The second runs diagonally from the top of the head to the pectoral fin's base.
- The third is a broad, diagonal black wedge covering the rear of the body and part of the dorsal and anal fins.
- Size: This is a relatively small butterflyfish, reaching a maximum length of about 5.5 inches (14 cm).
Habitat and distribution
- Range: The species is native to the Western Pacific Ocean, with its range including Taiwan, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Micronesia.
- Environment: In the wild, Burgess's butterflyfish inhabit deep, reef-associated waters, typically along steep drop-offs where gorgonians and black corals are abundant. They are most often found at depths greater than 130 feet (40 m).
