Acanthurus blochii, commonly known as the Bloch's surgeonfish, ringtail or the Lined surgeonfish, is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Acanthuridae. It is found in the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, East Africa, the Hawaiian Islands, and the western Pacific Ocean. Here are some key characteristics of Acanthurus blochii:
Appearance: Bloch's surgeonfish has an elongated, laterally compressed body with a pointed snout. It has a dark-colored body with thin, vertical blue lines running horizontally along its sides. The dorsal and anal fins are yellow, and it has a sharp spine on each side near the base of its tail.
Size: It can grow up to approximately 20-25 centimeters (8-10 inches) in length.
Habitat: This species is typically found in coral reefs and shallow coastal waters with abundant algae growth. It prefers areas with clear water and moderate currents.
Diet: Bloch's surgeonfish is herbivorous, primarily feeding on various species of algae and marine plants. It uses its sharp, beak-like mouth to graze on algae from rocks and coral surfaces.
Behavior: Surgeonfish are known for their ability to defend themselves using the sharp spines on either side of their tail. When threatened, they can extend these spines to deter predators. They are also known for their schooling behavior, often seen swimming in groups.
