The Flameback Angelfish, also known as the African Flameback Angelfish (Centropyge acanthops), is a species of marine angelfish that is native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly the western Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. This angelfish is well-known for its striking and vibrant coloration.
Here are some key characteristics and information about the Flameback Angelfish:
Appearance: Flameback Angelfish have a vibrant, flame-like coloration, which is the source of their common name. They typically have a bright orange to reddish-orange body with a striking blue-green iridescent spot on the upper part of their body, just behind the head. Their dorsal fin often has a blue margin.
Size: These angelfish are relatively small and typically grow to a size of around 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 centimeters).
Habitat: Flameback Angelfish are typically found in coral-rich areas, especially on reef slopes and lagoon environments. They inhabit tropical marine waters, often at depths ranging from 10 to 50 meters.
Behavior: They are generally peaceful fish and are often seen swimming near coral formations. These angelfish may occasionally nip at corals, particularly certain soft corals and polyps, which can be a concern in reef aquariums.
Diet: In the wild, their diet primarily consists of algae and small invertebrates that they find on the surfaces of coral and rock. In captivity, they can be fed a diet of high-quality marine flakes, frozen foods, and live foods.
