The Siganus vulpinus, commonly known as the Foxface Rabbitfish or Foxface Lo, is a striking and hardy rabbitfish favourite among marine aquarists for its vibrant colours, unique appearance, and utility as an algae grazer. Below is a detailed description:

Appearance:

  • Coloration: The Foxface Rabbitfish features a vibrant yellow body contrasted by a striking black and white mask-like pattern on its face. The transition from the mask to the yellow body is smooth, and its dorsal, anal, and tail fins are often edged with white or translucent tips.
  • Size: Typically grows to about 9 inches (23 cm) in length.
  • Distinct Features: Known for its elongated snout-like face and venomous spines on its dorsal fins used for defence.

Habitat:

  • Natural Range: Found in the Indo-Pacific region, including coral reefs and lagoons from the Philippines to Australia.
  • Preferred Environment: Typically inhabits shallow reefs and lagoons with abundant algae growth, where it grazes throughout the day.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: Requires a tank of at least 70 gallons for juveniles and 125 gallons or more for adults to allow sufficient swimming space.
  • Diet: Herbivorous and primarily feeds on algae in the wild. In captivity, it thrives on marine algae, spirulina, seaweed sheets, and high-quality herbivore pellets. It will also accept some meaty foods like mysis shrimp.
  • Substrate: Live rock is ideal for grazing and hiding, as the Foxface Rabbitfish tends to take cover when stressed.
  • Compatibility: Generally peaceful and can coexist with a wide variety of tankmates. However, it may exhibit territorial behaviour toward other rabbitfish in smaller tanks.
  • Reef-Safe: Reef-safe with caution. It is known to graze on nuisance algae but may nip at soft or LPS corals if underfed.

Behavior:

  • Activity Level: Active swimmer during the day, often seen grazing on algae-covered surfaces.
  • Social Behavior: Peaceful but may become defensive if provoked. Its venomous dorsal spines provide it with protection against predators and aggressive tankmates.
  • Shy Tendencies: Can be shy when first introduced to a tank, often hiding among rockwork, but typically becomes more confident over time.

Special Notes:

  • Venomous Spines: The dorsal spines are venomous and can cause painful stings to humans. Handle with care and avoid sudden movements near the fish.
  • Algae Control: Known as an excellent algae grazer, it is a functional addition to reef and community tanks.
  • Maintenance: Requires stable water conditions and a varied diet to maintain vibrant coloration and overall health.

The Foxface Rabbitfish is a hardy and visually stunning fish that adds beauty and utility to marine aquariums. Its calm demeanour and ability to control algae make it an excellent choice for hobbyists of all experience levels, provided they can accommodate its size and care requirements.
