Description
Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus)
The Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish is a stunning and hardy addition to any reef aquarium. Native to the waters of Sumatra, this variety begins life with three narrow white stripes across its deep red to maroon body. Over time, these stripes mature into a vibrant gold coloration—usually beginning around 9–12 months of age, with the head stripe changing first. Fish are typically shipped at 6–7 months old, still showing their juvenile white stripes.
Care & Behavior
-
One of the largest clownfish species—adult females can grow over 6 inches.
-
Known for their long lifespan, with captive pairs documented spawning for more than 35 years.
-
Best kept singly or as a mated pair, as they can be territorial. The Gold Stripe variety tends to be slightly less aggressive than the White Striped Maroon.
Diet
They thrive on a varied diet of meaty foods (such as mysis, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood) along with herbivore preparations to ensure complete nutrition.
Handling
Avoid using nets when moving these fish, as their cheek spines can easily get entangled. Instead, use a specimen container for safe transfer.
