Description
Guineafowl Puffer (Arothron meleagris)
The Guineafowl Puffer is a striking and charismatic species that adds a bold personality to any large saltwater aquarium. Known for its unique spotted appearance, this puffer can display two different color phases: a jet-black body covered in white spots (resembling a guineafowl bird) or a brilliant golden form. Some individuals even shift between the two morphs over time.
Highly intelligent and curious, the Guineafowl Puffer often becomes the “centerpiece” fish of the aquarium, quickly recognizing its keeper and begging for food. They thrive on a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, clams, squid, and other shellfish, which also help to naturally wear down their ever-growing teeth.
While generally hardy and long-lived, they are best kept with other large, robust tankmates, as they may nip at invertebrates and are not reef-safe.
This puffer is perfect for experienced aquarists looking for a show-stopping species with a big personality and unique beauty.
