The Long-Nosed Butterflyfish, scientific name Forcipiger longirostris, is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Chaetodontidae. It is also commonly known as the Longnose Butterflyfish or Forceps Fish. This beautiful fish is renowned for its striking appearance and elongated snout.

Here are some key characteristics and features of the Long-Nosed Butterflyfish:

Appearance: The Long-Nosed Butterflyfish has a laterally compressed body, which means it is flat from side to side. It has a deep, oval-shaped body with a vibrant coloration. The body is primarily white, with black bands running vertically across it. The dorsal fin is tall and has a black margin, while the tail fin is yellow. The most distinctive feature of this species is its long snout, which is used for hunting and feeding.

Size: On average, the Long-Nosed Butterflyfish grows to about 15-20 centimeters (6-8 inches) in length, although some individuals may reach up to 25 centimeters (10 inches).

Range and Habitat: This species is widespread throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It can be found in the Red Sea, the Maldives, Indonesia, the Philippines, and various other locations. Long-Nosed Butterflyfish typically inhabit coral reefs, where they seek shelter and feed on small invertebrates and coral polyps.

Behavior: Long-Nosed Butterflyfish are usually found in pairs or small groups. They are diurnal (active during the day) and spend their time swimming among coral formations, searching for food. They have a peaceful nature and are generally not aggressive towards other fish species. However, they may become territorial if kept in captivity with limited space.

Feeding Habits: The diet of Long-Nosed Butterflyfish primarily consists of coral polyps, small crustaceans, and other small invertebrates. They use their elongated snout to probe into crevices and feed on prey hidden within the coral reef structure. In aquariums, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.

Aquarium Care: If you plan to keep Long-Nosed Butterflyfish in an aquarium, it is important to provide them with an environment that mimics their natural habitat. This includes a well-maintained coral reef setup with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas. They require a tank size of at least 100 gallons to accommodate their active nature. Additionally, maintaining stable water conditions and a proper diet is crucial for their health and longevity.
