The Longhorn Cowfish (Lactoria cornuta) is a species of boxfish native to the Indo-Pacific region. It is known for its unique appearance, characterized by a box-shaped body and long "horns" extending from its head. Here are some key facts about the Longhorn Cowfish:

Appearance: Longhorn Cowfish are relatively small, typically growing up to around 18 inches (45 centimeters) in length. They have a hard, armor-like carapace covering their bodies, which acts as protection. The body coloration can vary from yellow to brown, often with vibrant blue and green spots or lines.

"Horns": The most distinctive feature of the Longhorn Cowfish is its two long, horn-like protrusions that extend from its forehead. These "horns" are actually modified dorsal fin spines and are used for defense and territorial displays.

Habitat: They are found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean, including areas such as the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, and the waters around Japan and Indonesia. They prefer shallow coral reefs and rocky areas.

Diet: Longhorn Cowfish are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods. They primarily eat small invertebrates such as crustaceans, worms, and mollusks. They also consume algae and small pieces of coral.

Behavior: Longhorn Cowfish are generally peaceful and solitary creatures. They have the ability to inflate their bodies with water or air when threatened, which makes them more challenging for predators to swallow. This behavior is known as "puffing up."

Poisonous Defense: Longhorn Cowfish have a unique defense mechanism. They possess specialized, toxic glands within their skin that release poisonous substances when they are stressed or injured. These toxins can deter potential predators and cause harm to other fish in the same aquarium if not properly handled.

Aquarium Keeping: Due to their distinctive appearance and interesting behaviors, Longhorn Cowfish are sometimes kept in aquariums by experienced fishkeepers. However, they require specific conditions, including a large tank with plenty of swimming space, excellent water quality, and a well-maintained diet.
