The Lyretail Anthias, scientifically known as Pseudanthias squamipinnis, is a popular and colorful saltwater fish species that belongs to the family Serranidae. It is commonly found in the warm tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, particularly around the reefs of the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean.
Here are some key characteristics and features of the Lyretail Anthias:
Appearance: Lyretail Anthias have a slender and elongated body with a vibrant coloration. The males are predominantly bright orange to pinkish-red, while the females and juveniles tend to have a yellowish coloration. The males possess an elongated dorsal fin that extends into a lyre or fan-like shape, giving them their distinctive name.
Size: They are a relatively small fish species, with males growing up to about 5 inches (12 centimeters) in length, while females are slightly smaller.
Behavior: Lyretail Anthias are highly social and active fish. In the wild, they form harems consisting of one dominant male and several females. The males engage in territorial displays and courtship rituals to attract and maintain their harem. They are also known for their swift movements and frequent darting behavior.
Habitat: Lyretail Anthias are primarily found in coral-rich areas of the reef. They inhabit depths ranging from 15 to 100 feet (4 to 30 meters) and are commonly seen swimming in the upper to mid-levels of the water column.
Feeding: They are omnivorous fish with a diet consisting of small crustaceans, zooplankton, and tiny marine invertebrates. In aquariums, they can be fed a varied diet including high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods like brine shrimp and copepods.
Aquarium Care: Keeping Lyretail Anthias in a home aquarium requires careful attention to their specific needs. They thrive in larger tanks with ample swimming space and plenty of hiding spots. It is advisable to keep them in groups with a ratio of one male to multiple females. The water conditions should be well-maintained, including stable temperature (around 75-80°F or 24-27°C), pH levels of 8.1-8.4, and salinity of 1.020-1.025.
Compatibility: Lyretail Anthias are generally peaceful fish but can be territorial towards their own species or similar-looking fish. It is essential to provide ample space and suitable tank mates that are not overly aggressive. Avoid keeping them with larger predatory fish that may view the anthias as food.
