The Acanthurus pyroferus, commonly known as the Chocolate Tang, Mimic Tang, or Mimic Surgeonfish, is a fascinating saltwater fish known for its adaptive coloration and peaceful temperament. Here's a detailed description:

Appearance:

  • Coloration: Juveniles often mimic the coloration of certain dwarf angelfish species, such as the Lemonpeel Angelfish (Centropyge flavissima), to deter predators. As they mature, their coloration changes to a more subdued brown or chocolate hue with hints of yellow and blue accents.
  • Size: Adults can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length.
  • Fins: Their dorsal and anal fins often display light blue edging, adding to their elegance.

Habitat:

  • Natural Range: Found in the Indo-Pacific region, including reefs around Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Preferred Environment: They inhabit coral reefs and lagoons, often seen grazing on algae-covered rocks.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A tank of at least 125 gallons is required due to its size and active swimming behaviour.
  • Diet: Primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and plant matter. In captivity, they thrive on a diet of marine algae, seaweed sheets, and high-quality herbivore pellets.
  • Substrate: A sandy or rocky substrate with live rock is ideal for grazing and natural behaviour.
  • Compatibility: It is generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards other tangs or similarly shaped fish. It is best kept with other non-aggressive tankmates.
  • Reef-Safe: Safe with corals and most invertebrates, as they primarily graze on algae.

Behavior:

  • Activity Level: Very active swimmer, often exploring all tank levels.
  • Social Behavior: Peaceful and adaptable, making it an excellent choice for community reef aquariums.

Acanthurus pyroferus is a beautiful and intriguing addition to large marine aquariums. It provides not only aesthetic appeal but also algae control. Its unique juvenile mimicry makes it particularly interesting for marine enthusiasts.
