The Moorish idol (Zanclus cornutus) is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Zanclidae. It is known for its striking and distinctive appearance, making it a popular fish among divers and aquarium enthusiasts.

Here are some key features and facts about the Moorish idol:

Appearance: The Moorish idol has a laterally compressed body with a long, slender snout. It has a large, fan-like dorsal fin and a similar, but smaller, anal fin. Its body is primarily black with white vertical bands and a yellow-orange coloration on the head, mouth, and tail.

Size: Adult Moorish idols can grow up to 20 to 23 centimeters (8 to 9 inches) in length, although some individuals may reach slightly larger sizes.

Distribution: These fish are found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific Ocean, including the Red Sea, the Maldives, the Great Barrier Reef, and Hawaii. They are typically associated with coral reefs and reef slopes.

Diet: Moorish idols are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of food sources. Their diet primarily consists of sponges, tunicates, bryozoans, and other small invertebrates. They may also consume algae and coral polyps.

Behavior: Moorish idols are typically seen in pairs or small groups, although larger aggregations can occur. They are known for their graceful swimming and foraging behavior, often moving along the coral reef in search of food. These fish have been observed engaging in cleaning behaviors, where they allow cleaner fish or cleaner shrimps to remove parasites from their bodies.

Aquarium Care: Moorish idols are notoriously challenging to keep in aquariums due to their specific dietary requirements, high level of activity, and susceptibility to stress-related diseases. They require large tanks with plenty of swimming space, high water quality, and a well-balanced diet consisting of both meaty and plant-based foods. Their captive lifespan is often shorter than their wild counterparts.
