Paracentropyge multifasciatus, commonly known as the Multibanded Pygmy Angelfish or Multifasciatus Angelfish, is a small and beautiful species of marine angelfish. As with many species in the genus Paracentropyge, it is highly sought after by marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its striking colors and unique appearance.
Key characteristics of the Paracentropyge multifasciatus include:
Size: This angelfish typically grows to about 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length, making it relatively small compared to other angelfish species.
Coloration: The body of the Multibanded Pygmy Angelfish is predominantly a bright orange-red color with several vertical white bands that run along its body. The dorsal and anal fins may also have a bluish tint, adding to its overall visual appeal.
Habitat: These angelfish are found in the western Pacific Ocean, specifically in the waters around Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. They inhabit coral reefs and rocky areas with abundant hiding spots and crevices.
Behavior: Paracentropyge multifasciatus is generally considered to be a peaceful species, but it can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-looking species. It's best to keep them in a suitably-sized aquarium with plenty of hiding spots to reduce aggression.
Feeding: In their natural habitat, they feed on various small invertebrates, zooplankton, and algae. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet, including high-quality prepared foods, frozen foods, and occasional live foods.
Aquarium Care: Keeping Paracentropyge multifasciatus in a home aquarium can be challenging due to their specific dietary and environmental requirements. A well-maintained reef tank with live rock, corals, and hiding places is essential. Regular water quality monitoring and maintenance are crucial for their well-being.
