The Orange Shoulder Tang (Acanthurus olivaceus), also known as the Orangeband Surgeonfish, is a striking marine fish commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region. It has an elongated, laterally compressed body with a unique colour pattern that changes as the fish matures.
Juvenile Appearance:
- Colour: Juveniles are typically bright yellow all over.
- Size: They start small, around 2-3 inches (5-8 cm).
- Markings: Juveniles do not have adults' distinctive orange shoulder bands.
Adult Appearance:
- Color: Adults transition to a more muted coloration. Their bodies become grayish-blue or olive-green.
- Distinctive Markings: The most notable feature is the orange or reddish band or "shoulder" that extends vertically just behind the gill cover. A blue band typically outlines this orange stripe.
- Size: Adults can grow up to 14-15 inches (35-38 cm) in length.
- Tail: The tail is crescent-shaped and often darker than the body.
Behavior:
- Diet: Orange Shoulder Tangs are herbivorous, feeding mainly on algae in the wild. In aquariums, they can be fed various algae-based foods, along with some meaty foods as supplements.
- Temperament: They are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially as they grow. They do well in larger tanks where they have plenty of swimming space.
- Habitat: They are found in coral reefs, often swimming in small groups or solitary. They are active swimmers and prefer tanks with strong water flow.
