Acanthurus japonicus, commonly known as the Japanese surgeonfish or Japanese tang, is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Acanthuridae. This family of fish is also referred to as surgeonfishes, tangs, or doctorfishes due to the presence of sharp spines or "scalpels" on either side of their caudal peduncles (near the tail), which resemble surgical instruments.

Here are some key characteristics and features of Acanthurus japonicus:

Physical Appearance: Acanthurus japonicus has an elongated, laterally compressed body with a sleek, streamlined shape, well-suited for swift swimming. The body coloration is typically bluish-gray to brownish with a white or light-colored belly. It has a distinctive dark patch on the caudal peduncle, followed by a white area, and then a yellowish tail.

Size: These fish can grow up to about 20-25 centimeters (8-10 inches) in length.

Habitat: The Japanese surgeonfish is native to the coastal waters of Japan and is commonly found in rocky reefs, coral reefs, and shallow coastal areas with rich algal growth. They prefer areas with moderate to strong water movement.

Diet: Acanthurus japonicus is primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and other plant material present on rocks and coral surfaces. Their specialized mouths and dental structures help them graze on algae efficiently.

Behavior: Surgeonfishes are usually active swimmers and can form schools with other individuals. They may use their sharp scalpel-like spines for defense against potential predators.

Aquarium Keeping: Acanthurus japonicus is occasionally kept in home aquariums by experienced marine enthusiasts. However, it is essential to provide them with a spacious tank with plenty of hiding spots, live rock, and algae for grazing. As herbivores, their diet should consist of a variety of marine algae and plant-based foods.
