The Naso hexacanthus, commonly known as the Sleek Unicornfish or Blue Unicornfish, is an elegant and robust species of surgeonfish known for its streamlined body and subtle yet beautiful coloration. Here's a detailed description:
Appearance:
- Coloration: The Sleek Unicornfish has a smooth, grayish-blue body with a subtle sheen, giving it an understated yet graceful appearance. Depending on the fish's mood and environment, the coloration can darken or lighten.
- Size: This species is one of the larger unicornfish, reaching lengths of up to 24 inches (60 cm) in the wild.
- Distinct Features: Unlike other unicornfish species, it lacks a prominent "horn" on its forehead, though it may develop a slight bulge as it matures.
- Fins: The dorsal and anal fins often have a delicate yellow or white outline, adding a touch of contrast.
Habitat:
- Natural Range: Found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including coral reefs and open ocean areas.
- Preferred Environment: Often seen in outer reef slopes and deep lagoons, typically swimming in schools.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: Due to its size and highly active swimming behaviour, it requires a vast tank, at least 300 gallons.
- Diet: Herbivorous, grazing primarily on algae in the wild. In captivity, it thrives on a diet of marine algae, seaweed sheets, spirulina, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Occasional offerings of meaty foods like mysis shrimp can add variety.
- Substrate: Live rock with natural algae growth is ideal for grazing.
- Compatibility: Generally peaceful but requires ample space to prevent territorial disputes, especially with other large tangs or unicornfish.
- Reef-Safe: Reef-safe, as it does not harm corals or invertebrates.
Behavior:
- Activity Level: Highly active and constantly swimming, often utilizing the entire tank.
- Social Behavior: It is peaceful, making it a good addition to large community aquariums. It can coexist well with other large, non-aggressive fish.
Special Notes:
- Growth: This species grows very large and is best suited for public aquariums or private aquarists with spacious tanks.
- Maintenance requires excellent water quality and strong water flow to mimic its natural reef environment.
The Naso hexacanthus is a stunning, peaceful giant that brings elegance and utility to huge marine aquariums. While its size and care requirements make it a challenge, its calm demeanour and beauty make it a rewarding addition for experienced aquarists.
