The Yellowhead wrasse, scientifically known as Halichoeres garnoti, is a colorful and popular species of wrasse found in the Western Atlantic Ocean. These fish are native to the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, where they inhabit coral reefs, rocky areas, and seagrass beds.

Yellowhead wrasse are easily recognized by their vibrant coloration and distinct markings. They have a bright yellow head, which contrasts sharply with the rest of their body, typically ranging from green to reddish-brown. Juvenile Yellowhead wrasse often have more subdued colors, with a mottled appearance that helps them camouflage among reef structures.

In terms of behavior, Yellowhead wrasse are typically active and sociable fish. They spend much of their time swimming around the reef in search of food, which primarily consists of small invertebrates, crustaceans, and zooplankton.

These wrasse are known for their interesting mating behavior, where dominant males display vibrant colors to attract females and establish territories on the reef. They can undergo sex changes, with some females transitioning into males over time.

Yellowhead wrasse are popular choices for marine aquariums due to their striking appearance and active nature. However, they require a well-established reef tank with plenty of hiding spots and room to swim. Providing a varied diet that includes meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood is essential for their health and vibrancy in captivity.
