The Yellow Belly Regal Angelfish, also known as the Yellow-Bellied or Yellow Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus), is a beautiful marine fish belonging to the family Pomacanthidae. It is highly sought after by aquarium enthusiasts due to its striking appearance and vibrant colors.
Appearance: The Yellow Belly Regal Angelfish has a deep, compressed body with a bright blue coloration on its head and upper body. The posterior part of its body, including the belly, is predominantly yellow. It has vertical black stripes that run across its body, enhancing its overall appearance. The dorsal and anal fins of the Yellow Belly Regal Angelfish are elongated, giving it a regal and elegant look.
Size: This angelfish species can reach a maximum length of about 9 to 10 inches (22 to 25 cm) in the wild. However, in captivity, they usually grow to be around 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) long.
Habitat and Distribution: The Yellow Belly Regal Angelfish is native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters of the Red Sea, East Africa, Japan, Micronesia, and Australia. It typically inhabits coral reefs and lagoons, preferring areas with rich coral growth.
Behavior and Compatibility: In the wild, Yellow Belly Regal Angelfish are usually found in pairs or small groups. They are generally peaceful but can become territorial when kept in smaller aquariums. It is advisable to provide them with plenty of hiding spots and ample swimming space. They should be kept in larger tanks (at least 100 gallons) to minimize aggression issues.
Feeding: In their natural habitat, Yellow Belly Regal Angelfish primarily feed on a diet consisting of sponges and tunicates. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet including high-quality angelfish preparations, spirulina, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. Providing a balanced diet is crucial for their overall health and coloration.
Aquarium Care: Keeping a Yellow Belly Regal Angelfish requires a well-maintained aquarium with stable water parameters. The tank should have a good filtration system, and regular water changes are essential. They thrive in a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C) and a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4.
