The Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish, also known as Hemitaurichthys polylepis, is a species of butterflyfish found in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It is a popular aquarium fish due to its striking appearance and peaceful nature.
Here are some key characteristics of the Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish:
Appearance: The Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish has a unique triangular body shape, which gives it its common name. It has a vibrant yellow coloration with a black vertical band that runs through its eye and a black band on its dorsal fin. The fins are usually yellow or transparent.
Size: On average, Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish grow to a size of around 5-6 inches (12-15 cm) in length. However, some individuals may reach a maximum size of up to 8 inches (20 cm).
Habitat: This species is native to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, the Maldives, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Australia. It inhabits coral reefs and lagoons, often found in areas with rich coral growth.
Behavior: Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish are generally peaceful and can be kept in community aquariums with other non-aggressive fish species. They are active swimmers and require ample space to swim. In the wild, they are often seen in pairs or small groups.
Diet: In their natural habitat, Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish feed primarily on coral polyps, small invertebrates, and zooplankton. In captivity, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet foods, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and small crustaceans.
Aquarium Care: If you plan to keep Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish in an aquarium, it is essential to provide them with a well-established reef environment. They require plenty of hiding spots, live rock formations, and open swimming areas. The water temperature should be maintained between 74-82°F (23-28°C), and the pH level should be around 8.1-8.4. Regular water changes and good filtration are crucial for their health.
