The Acanthurus xanthopterus, commonly known as the Yellowfin Surgeonfish or Yellowfin Tang, is a large and striking member of the surgeonfish family, prized for its vibrant coloration and active behaviour. Below is a detailed description:

Appearance:

  • Coloration: The body is typically a grayish to olive colour, with a gradient of lighter shades towards the belly. It features a subtle bluish tint along its body.
  • Fins: As the name suggests, its pectoral fins are accented with a striking yellow colour, while the dorsal and anal fins often have a blue to purple edging.
  • Size: This species can grow up to 15 inches (38 cm) in length, making it one of the larger surgeonfish.
  • Distinct Features: Like other surgeonfish, it has a sharp, scalpel-like spine near the base of its tail for defence.

Habitat:

  • Natural Range: Found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea to Hawaii and Australia.
  • Preferred Environment: Commonly inhabits coral reefs, lagoons, and coastal areas, often swimming in schools or as solitary individuals.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: It requires a considerable tank—at least 180 gallons—to accommodate its size and active swimming behaviour.
  • Diet: Primarily herbivorous, grazing on algae and plant material. In captivity, it thrives on a diet of marine algae, spirulina, seaweed, and high-quality herbivore pellets. It can also accept occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp for variety.
  • Substrate: A sandy substrate with live rock provides opportunities for natural grazing.
  • Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may become territorial toward other tangs, especially if the tank is not spacious enough.
  • Reef-Safe: Considered reef-safe, as it will not harm corals or most invertebrates.

Behavior:

  • Activity Level: Highly active swimmer, often patrolling the tank for food.
  • Social Behavior: Peaceful with other species but may assert dominance over similar-shaped fish. It is best kept as a single individual in smaller systems with other tangs.

Special Notes:

  • Growth: Due to its large adult size, this species must provide ample space and resources as it matures.
  • Water Quality: Sensitive to water quality, requiring stable parameters and excellent filtration in the aquarium.

The Yellowfin Surgeonfish is a majestic species well-suited for large marine aquariums. It's vibrant yellow fins and graceful swimming make it a centrepiece fish for advanced hobbyists who can meet its space and care requirements.
